McArdle Syndrome

Description

McArdle syndrome is the inability to break down glycogen. Glycogen is an important energy source stored in muscle tissue.

McArdle syndrome results from a defect in a gene that makes a protein called glycogen phosphorylase. As a result, the body can not break down glycogen in the muscles. This can cause weakness, seizures, and muscle aches.

Symptom

Common symptoms include, pain ototo, ototo cramps, muscle stiffness, muscle weakness, burgundy-colored urine.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment, but symptoms can be managed by controlling exercise and physical activity. For example, avoid harsh or excessive exercise.
