Noma

Description

Noma is a type of gangrene that destroys mucous membranes of the mouth and other tissues.This occurs in malnourished children in areas that lack clean.

The exact cause is unknown but may be caused by a bacteria called fusospirochetal organisms. This disorder most often occurs in adolescents, children with severe malnutrition between the ages of 2 and 5 years. Often they have a disease like measles, dengue, tuberculosis, cancer, or immunodeficiency.

Risk factors include Kwashiorkor and other forms of severe protein malnutrition, poor sanitation, and poor hygiene, disorders such as measles or leukemia, and living in a poor country.

Symptom

Noma causes tissue damage to deteriorate rapidly. Inflamed gums and cheek walls and develop into ulcers. Ulcers developed and issued a stink, cause bad breath and the smell of the skin.

Infection spreads to the skin, and tissues in the lips and cheeks to die. This process can eventually destroy the soft tissue and bone. Finally, the destruction of bone around the mouth cause of disability and loss of teeth.

Noma can also affect the genitals, spreading to the genital skin (this is sometimes called noma pudendi).

Treatment

Antibiotics and proper nutrition help stop the disease getting worse. Plastic surgery may be necessary to remove damaged tissue and reconstruct facial bones. This will improve the facial appearance and function of the mouth and jaw.
